I thought something like that might happen. Poor Jonathan.
Wednesday, February 28. 2007The Nature of Things, Part 8
I'm not sure which woke me, my aching muscles, or my growling stomach, but by the time I fought my way to full consciousness, both were clamoring for my attention. Overhead, stars pincushioned the night sky like they never do in a city.
I pushed myself into a sitting position, grunting against the pain in my evidently under-used muscles. David crouched under a nearby tree, feeding twigs to a tiny flame. He glanced over as I shuffled over and collapsed near the fire. "Sleep well?" "I'm starving. What are we going to do about food?" "I don't know yet. I'm still trying to figure out what happened." "I thought you knew." "What do you mean? Why do you say that?" "Maybe I just dreamed it." "Dreamed what?" "I could have sworn that just before I fell asleep, you said something like, 'what have I done.'"
He nodded, ruefully. "I did, you're right. But, unfortunately, that isn't why we're here." "So, what is it?" He stared into the fire. Several long minutes crept by. When he spoke, he startled me. "Try to do something." "Huh?" "Magic. Do something magic. Something simple. Fire's easy. Here," he held a twig out to me, "light this on fire." "OK." I took the twig, puzzled by his sudden vehemence. I closed my eyes. It's easier for me to imagine things with my eyes closed. With the image of the flaming twig firmly in my mind, I pushed outward, focusing my thoughts on the stick and the air around it. I waited, listening for an answering voice . . . and heard nothing. Doubts flashed into my mind. Had I really heard a voice before? Was it just a product of too much stress and too little sleep? Had I really found David on my own, without the help of magic? "No!" I spoke the word aloud without meaning to. Taking a deep breath, I re-focused, imagining every detail: the heat, the light, the smell of the smoke, the colors of the flame. I pushed the image out, even attaching a "please" to my request. Nothing. I opened my eyes. David was watching me sadly. "I did it before. I really did. I wasn't making it up." I gritted my teeth and closed my eyes, channeling all of my energy into imagining a small burning twig. For a moment, I paused when I felt David's hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry about it. Let me explain." I didn't even open my eyes. "No. I have to to this." I forced the request out of my mind, and into the air with all my strength, trembling with the effort. Almost immediately I heard the voice, thunderous, echoing around me, throwing me backwards. "Liar!" I gingerly raised my head to look at David. He sighed. "Truth and respect." A regretful smile spread across his face. "It's all about truth and respect." Trackbacks

Radar on :
What correlation does this have to the Biblical stories of David and Jonathon?
And does this mean that the Universe is mad at Jonathon? Do you think now would be a good time for me to try and give her a call? Johnny Elbows on :
David and Jonathan were very close friends. I wouldn't try to look a whole lot deeper than that. In this case, the Bible's just a convenient source for names.
As for the Universe, who knows, now might be a good time to call her. I would suggest standing in a public place and yelling out to the Universe that you want her. I'm sure that would get some attention. :) Daboo on :
But for purely altruistic reasons, I'm going to need to film that. Let me know what time is best for you.
Ancient of Days on :
But is it really a lie if you firmly believe it with all of your heart? I think Johnathan is getting a bit of a raw deal from the universe here.
