In 1942, the Christian writer and theologian C.S. Lewis published a work called The Screwtape Letters, dedicated to his close friend and fellow writer J.R.R. Tolkien. It is, as far as I know, one of the greatest fictional studies of the nature of man, the effects of temptation and sin, and the process of and need for repentance. It is presented as a series of letters between two demons - the apprentice demon Wormwood, who is on his first-ever solo assignment to tempt a human being, and Wormwood’s uncle, the accomplished demon Screwtape. At one point, Screwtape offers his nephew the following bit of insight into human nature - and I will paraphrase here:

Okay, so I guess it could get worse. The first three losses weren't unexpected. Maybe we didn't expect them to perform as badly as they did, but Byu losing the previous three games wasn't out of the realm of expectation.
But Utah State was sitting there as the perfect get well medicine for the Cougars. After all, this is the modus operandi of the Cougars. It's not just the loss to Utah State that was unexpected. Rivalry games have weird results. It was the turnovers, the injuries, and the offense being flat out unprepared and inept that was so unexpected. You can't prepare for injuries, but the others can definitely be coached and prepped for. Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Thursday, September 28. 2017

Four letter word #1, four letter word #2, four letter word #3, four letter word #1 again preceded by a six letter word.
I hate playing Arizona more than any team out there right now. Since joining the Pac-12, and since they hired Rich Rod to be their coach, the Arizona wildcats are the thorn in the paw for the Utes. Even when Utah wins, Arizona screws them up. I am so glad to be done with that game. Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Thursday, September 21. 2017Red, Blue And Pigskin
Forget the football for a moment, the biggest thing that happened this weekend was #Rhett.
To paraphrase Rhett himself in the midst of all this, we may have peaked. Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Wednesday, September 13. 2017

This must be how Phil Connors felt. Every year, different pieces, same story. No matter how dominant one team is, and no matter how hapless the other team is, when it comes to the end, the game is always on the line, waiting for something strange, and crazy to happen.
Of course, I'd rather suffer through this kind of Groundhog's Day than the one Byu fans are living through. Note: In this analogy, 2011 is the suicide montage from the movie. The Holy War has come and gone, and while it won't be back until next November, there still enough time to look back at the good, the bad, and the ugly for both teams and see what we can learn about both teams after the rivalry clash. But first... Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Wednesday, September 6. 2017

Well.....
I've got nothing. There's really not anything of value that can come from last week. Utes played a lesser opponent, while Byu was involved in a game so horrifically and historically one sided, that it would be impossible to extrapolate anything of value from it. Let's just move on shall we. Besides. It's Holy War week, and while my thoughts about whether this game should be played on a yearly basis has changed over the last 6 years (it shouldn't), my enjoyment of the game when it's actually here hasn't changed. So let's get to the Holy War Breakdown. Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Monday, March 20. 2017The Knights who say "Meh"

The Chentish people live a hard, bitter life; Chental is a barren rock in the middle of the Qorlean Sea, and its people have struggled to find their path in this modern world of qaa-powered streetlamps and steam-driven turbines. Once a band of proud conquerors, sending out regular raids against the Shorefolk, the Chent have in recent years turned to mercenarism. Their skills as sell-swords are highly prized, and their courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds can be best summarized in one of their beloved folks songs, "Bid Me Not." Sung as a call/response between the Chentish men and women, this song is traditionally performed before any warband leaves the isle; it speaks of their belief in an afterlife, and demonstrates how death in valorous battle is the highest possible virture for a Chentish man-at-arms.

Normally, the Tulip Tree playhouse catered to the nobles and those who wished to be nobles, the rich merchants who were presenting their daughters as possible matches for the idle scions of the less-wealthy blue bloods. Today, however, its elaborately decorated halls were filled with sell swords, cut throats, and bounty hunters.
"We are looking for this man," the soldier said. His uniform identified him as a captain of the Home Guard. He held aloft a sketch of a thin pop-eyed man with a long, narrow nose. The bare fact that expensive paper had been used for a sketch identified the man as a significant target, but when the soldier continued, it became clear how significant. "A reward of five thousand gold marks will be paid to the man who brings him to me alive." Continue reading "At the Tulip Tree Playhouse" Sunday, January 1. 2017

Patience
The glowing form sat in the Void, focused on keeping itself imperforate. Would its time ever come? It will come – wait for it It had been so long. The form couldn’t remember where it had come from before, or what it was waiting for. It knew, vaguely, that there was a concept called “time” - there had been a before, and there would eventually be an after - but here in the Void, the interminable now stretched out in front of it. You’ll know it when it comes Continue reading "Prologue: The Form and The Void" Tuesday, December 27. 2016The Bringer
Traer opened the door to his small cottage hung his knapsack on a peg beside the door, and sank into a chair beside the table. Papers stood in careful stacks and careless heaps all over the table. An ink bottle and several discarded quills were scattered among the papers.Traer rifled through one of the stacks, extracting a single sheet, covered on one side and part of another with close, cramped script.

The high peaks of the Blue Mountains form the border between the icy lands of the Normen and the more temperate lands of their brothers, the Harlon. Once, the two lands were one, but the difficult passes, the differences in climate, and more than one succession crisis had separated them. Now they fought as only brothers can, speaking the same language, worshiping the same gods, but hating and killing each other at any opportunity.
