Friday, June 6. 2008Movie Review: You Don't Mess With the Zohan

Consensus: You Don't Mess With the Zohan features intermittent laughs, and will please Sandler diehards, but after awhile the leaky premise wears thin. A 2-hour opus of sex, sex, sex, sex, sex and more sex. Even drunken frat boys will be screaming, "Enough already, we get it!" Willie Waffle WaffleMovies.com If one-note jokes that drag on too long or are worked into the ground aren't enough to trigger comic nausea, then perhaps the myriad uses of hummus will do the trick in You Don't Mess With the Zohan. Claudia Puig USA Today You Don't Mess With the Zohan might actually be the stupidest movie with good intentions that I've ever seen. M.E. Russell Oregonian How much you like this will depend upon your appreciation for repeated jokes about hummus, gays, Zohan's crotch and his fondness for older women. Lou Lumenick New York Post Let me be blunt: You Don’t Mess With the Zohan is the finest post-Zionist action-hairdressing sex comedy I have ever seen. A.O. Scott New York Times Trackbacks

A non-racist hearing caucasian theist man (Don't beat me up) on :
What's up with the reviews? I can read Rotten Tomatoes, too. Are you just proving that you can review things without experiencing them?
The Mad Giggler on :
Actually, I'd been looking forward to this movie, because they'd done a good job with the trailer. I was disappointed to see the actual movie getting poor reviews but decided to post the more humorous excerpts here. You can still go to rotten tomatoes yourself if you want to (that's why I posted the link.)
Besides, I think I proved with my Sex and the City review that I can review things without actually experiencing them. Sideshow on :
Personally from the viewing of the trailers I figured it to be exactly what the above reviews say it is.
The Mad Giggler on :
Are you saying that from the reviews it looks like an Adam Sandler movie on the level of Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy? Or did you expect it to be Anger Management meets Austin Powers?
Sideshow on :
I wasn't expecting anything near the level of Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, or Anger Management.
Actually I wasn't even expecting it to be as good as Austin Powers. Maybe closer to AP 2 or 3. What it seemed to me, was the movie had 1 [sex]joke, and it was going to run it into the ground before the opening credits finished. Then just keep going. The Mad Giggler on :
Weird. I wonder if I was just asleep through the trailer or high or something. That's exactly what I'm expecting from the new Mike Myers film, though.
Ancient of Days on :
I have to admit I was pretty surprised at how excited people seemed about this one - the trailer turned me off immediately. Same with the Mike Myers one - with the exception of the very opening part where he's playing with the voice-over machine. :)

There might be a difference for some people between "Review by random strangers at RT" and "Review by people I actually know and can base my own judgements on".
Just a few examples: INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL - Worst movie I've seen yet this year, got a 77% on RT THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN - *maybe* the best movie I've seen this year, and easily as good as the first, got a 65% at RT MR. DEEDS - one of Adam Sandler's better films, got a 22% from RT versus the atrocity of giving HAPPY GILMORE a 57%. The forgettable BANK JOB got a whopping 78% - higher than Prince Caspian?! For this cause, plus that fact that I watched a ton of movies while Mrs. AoD and the rugrats were out of town, I started reviewing movies myself. The Mad Giggler on :
I guess Theist Guy is tired of our review meme. Time to pick a new one.
Of course, since he hasn't posted anything since 2007-09-29, maybe he should do something about our blog content. |
