Jim on :
I really look forward to Monday mornings and TrekWest5. It's a good start to the day. You must have Barbara back on sometime. She's absolutely charming.
Regarding "Attached": A lot of blame was placed at Gates McFadden's feet this week, but I don't really find her at fault here. To me, this episode is a writer/producer screw up. As stated in the podcast, the attraction between these two characters has been in the show from the beginning. Whenever Picard had a love interest, Crusher showed jealousy. Multiple times when she believed she might die, she began to tell him her feelings. For years now, they've spent most mornings together breakfasting, telling each other about their days, debating politics (as in this episode). Probably no one is closer to each than the other. So, if the writers don't want to put them together, they need to either leave the situation alone or give some better reason than "maybe we shouldn't". They've totally miswritten Beverly here, as she never gives Jean Luc her feelings. Her feelings are never discussed. This is just another opportunity to let Picard suffer some disappointment or loss, which the writers seem to be relying on more and more, because of Stewart's sensitivity playing the part. But the story doesn't satisfy at all. In fact, it makes no sense. I suspect that the only reason not to bring them together is that the movie franchise would be starting soon and they did not want to have their hands tied as writers. The producers likely felt a single Picard offered up possibilities of romantic tension that an attached Picard could not. If that is the case, they should probably have just left it alone.
I'm a little disappointed in Jon this week. I expected a Marvel theme. I was waiting for an X-men reference for "Gambit". I thought for sure we'd get "Mary Janey" for "Dark Page", and maybe a "Professor X-ey" for "Attached".
I do apologize for the lack of comments. I actually was sick the week before and almost didn't send any in then, either. In fact, I asked Pete if you two were recording, because I was considering sending in nothing and going to bed instead of sending comments. After two weeks of being sick, I just felt so tired and didn't feel like typing my notes. So, I took a nap.
Have a good week.
