Remember as the Utes suffered through the first couple years in the Pac-12 and the common wisdom was that Utah was lucky to have missed Oregon and Stanford during the first two year rotation, and they'd really be hurting once those two came up on the schedule?
2011 & 2012 Utes versus Cal and Washington 1-3 2013 & 2014 Utes versus Oregon and Stanford 2-2 Fortunately past results are not a guarantee of the future, or I would really be worried when Stanford drops off next year and Cal and Washington are back along with Oregon. (Let's be honest though, I'm always worried anyways.) Meanwhile it's Senior Weekend in the state of Utah as all three Division 1-A teams play their final home game of the year. (The two Division 1-AA teams had their final home game last week, and final game this week.) For many of the seniors it's the end of a way of life. After this season most of them won't ever play organized football again. Also for the first time since 2011 all three teams are officially bowl-eligible. Just another boring old weekend of football in the Beehive State where nothing at all memorable whatsoever happened.
Okay maybe not true, but it was, what has become this year, just another Saturday Night at Rice-Eccles. Also did you know that teams from the state of Utah have now lost 5 QB's, who have started at least one game, to season ending injury. November begins the way September ends with the Cougars getting a win (much needed) and the Ute fans all on a ledge with me just wanting to push them all off.

What a difference a single month makes. A month ago, the Cougars were undefeated, and fans were dreaming of Heisman trophies and national championships. An October full of tricks later, and the Cougars have lost 4 straight. Lost numerable personnel, including most importantly Taysom Hill. Now the Coaches are on the verge of losing the locker room.
Basically the last month went from tweets like this, to a hypocrisy filled, self contradicting "open letter" like this, by the same loud mouthed former player. After the final weekend in September, a single loss had Ute fans on a ledge, ready to jump. They were ready to get Whittingham out of town immediately. The Utes still couldn't win a close game. They were calling for Kendal Thompson to replace Travis Wilson. In general Ute fans were ready to give up on any chance of a bowl game. Three dramatic, last minute victories later, and the Utes are highly ranked, and bowl eligible. Fans got their chance to look at Thompson and immediately wanted Wilson back. Now some are even (crazily) whispering that "P" word, despite being 17th in the initial rankings. But October is the time of scares and nightmares, so fittingly, the Utes end October with a really brutal trick. Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Wednesday, October 22. 2014

See, I told you we hadn't seen the last of Travis Wilson.
They say that an ugly win counts just as much as a win with style points. Fortunately for Utah the same can be said about a fugly one. For Byu, it became painfully obvious that some changes need to be made to attitudes on the team, but not because of anything that happened during the game. Thursday night sure ran the gamut. There was a little bit of everything. Some good, some bad, some ugly. Enough to make Byu fans happy. Enough to make them sad, and definitely enough to anger them.
Meanwhile the Utes were off as they prepared for a possible season defining game in Corvalis. But the good news is that we have finally published our movie podcast on Stargate the movie. Joey and I each brought a different spin to things, as usual. But if was fun to be back in the chairs recording, even if it did takes months for our schedules to properly align. Anyway, enjoy! I may not have many rules in life, but this is one of them, it doesn't matter if I'm on vacation, when the Utes are the historical night cap of one of the craziest, wildest, upset ridden weeks in college football history, a week that also saw all of the Cougar worst case scenarios come to fruition, well then I have to talk about it.
The only problem is, I'm not sure where to start after such a crazy weekend. I guess we'll just rip the band aid off for Byu fans and get the bad out of the way, but worry not Cougar fans, as I will actually point out a glimmer of hope. It was all set up perfectly. The Utes had just passed a major test the week previously by winning a road game. They're up 21-0 just about 8 minutes into the game. Here they had their chance to have their first ever Pac-12 winning record, and really get a stranglehold on a bowl bid.
Sadly with the opportunity in their hands, the Utes dropped the ball. Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Friday, September 26. 2014

What is it about Byu and Virginia playing that causes a major weather delay for fans in this state? Oh well even the rain in Michigan couldn't damper a good weekend for the state of Utah.
In Provo, although sloppily, the Cougars managed to secure their most impressive win of the year so far. It'll probably end up as their most impressive win of the year when things are all said and done. For the Utes, the talk was about playing Michigan in front of the 100,000 plus of the Big House. In the end, the Utes also secured their most impressive victory of the young season in front of about 5,000, most of whom were sporting Red. A task LONG overdue, I upgraded a number of software packages on this machine (including the versions of the database software, the httpd, the PHP engine, and the S9Y blogging platform itself).
If anyone notices anything amiss, please let me know ASAP through the standard channels, and thanks for tuning into to Radio Homestarmy. Thursday, September 18. 2014

Have you ever been busy in your day to day grind, and forget how close to a holiday you were? When you look at the calendar and realize that next Monday is a holiday you had forgotten about, there's this brief feeling of elation and happiness. I have to thing that's how all the football widows in the state felt this past weekend when they realized that neither Utah or Byu were playing on Saturday. It was as if they had found a forgotten holiday.
Utah State fans wish they could go on holiday after seeing Chuckie Keeton go down with another knee injury. Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Sunday, September 7. 2014

If the first week of the year is all about expectation and anticipation, and the second week is all about hyperbole with only a single game (usually against crappy crappy opponents), than around the country this is the week where we can actually start looking back on what we learned.
Around the country, we've learned a few things so far this year. For example we learned that Byu has a better shot at making this year's playoffs (with their odds still at a little less than slim) than any of the 12 teams from the B1G (who are firmly planted at none.) We learned a QB can make a huge difference (although we've already known this), as Everett Golson continued his regular season undefeated streak for Notre Dame. Golson led the Irish to an undefeated season and championship game appearance two years ago. He was kicked off the team last year, but earned his way back this season and has the Irish at 2-0. Meanwhile in Columbus Ohio State went from playoff contender to struggling to beat Navy in the opener, and losing to Virginia Tech (despite how hard the Hokies tried to give it to the Buckeyes) after the loss of Braxton Miller. In Texas we're in the process of learning if a Football obsessed fan base is willing to suffer through a difficult short term, in order to return to prominence eventually, but this time having done it the right way, without thugs and criminals. Locally we've begun to learn a few things about Byu and Utah as well. Continue reading "Red, Blue And Pigskin" Tuesday, September 2. 2014

Well thankfully that's over, maybe now we can actually get to something resembling actual competition.
