My psychic powers have only increased since last fantasy football season, and I am happy to report that I correctly picked the return of Brett Favre (the five letter f-word) to the Minnesota Vikings.

Friday, May 14. 2010Paramore
So, most of you probably know that I've been caught being unfaithful. . .to my favorite band. At some point I started listening to Paramore more than U2. This put me in a difficult position when I had to choose to go with friends to see U2 or go by myself to see Paramore. With some hesitation I opted to see the U2 360 Claw Monster tour. Then, on Mother's Day, I was informed that my mother-in-law would very much like to see Paramore (the next night) and would I be interested. Of course I was interested. I know I'm not cool, so what do I care if all those kids 10+ years younger than me think I'm weird for going to a concert with my mother-in-law. There were still a few upper-bowl tickets available, so Monday night "ladybug" and I drove out to Sideshow's neck of the woods and attended an extremely fun show.
The opening band was Fun. You can stream their latest album here or download a free mp3 from Amazon here. Ladybug compared their lead singer to Mick Jagger, and I'll admit he had some really good stage presence. The second band was Relient K. You may remember their single "Must Have Done Something Right" from a few years back. I didn't feel that their live show was very impressive. Paramore was, of course, awesome. Hayley is an incredible performer. She has more energy than a nuclear reactor - which is probably why I could barely speak after scream-singing for two hours straight. The X-Men are blessed and cursed with genetic mutations; some with visible differences, some not so visible. Claremont portrays the mutant experience as no one has, with parallels to our own human experience. His initial unbroken 17-year run on the X-Men is the stuff of industry legend. His run culminated with the launch of the new title, X-Men, whose first issue sold over 7.6 million copies, a record that stands today. In total, Claremont has sold in excess of 500,000,000 comics worldwide including work on Aliens Vs Predator, Sovereign Seven, Star Trek and many more. His X-Men story, “Dark Phoenix,” with its radical treatment of the story’s central character, paved the way for reinterpretation of the superhero mythos throughout the industry. Author's Note: Written from the perspective of one of the characters in my TSG group.
It is odd how the most mundane occurrence can be made extraordinary. Especially when undertaken with the colorful collection of characters comprising my current company. (Oh what a lovely alliteration!) My master assured me this would be a routine journey to acquire some ritual scrolls made available for purchase by a scholar in Winterhaven. Yet here I am, delving into the dank dungeon affectionately designated as Shadowfell Keep. (Another!) All of the activities that we have undertaken seem routine adventures on the surface. Nothing a standard guild couldn't handle. Take for instance the rat-infested ruins of the Keep's southeast corner. My first instinct was to unleash mystical energies in a blast strong enough to clear a safe path through. Standard procedure for adventuring types. But not for this group, no. The first thought for the rest of the group was, "Can we tame one of these giant rodents?" So, of course, several attempt to make friendly acquaintance with the local rodentia. And to my surprise, one actually seems to take a liking to Oskar, our, uh, dwarven ranger. I was mystified by his reaction to success. Instead of having his new ally aid us in ridding this place of evil, he guts the foul thing open. Oh, there was just blood everywhere and all he can say is, "I hate rats. Disgusting." So we clear our path through and discover a chamber off by itself, and thinking we might find some interesting treasure, we explore. Unfortunately, what we find inside is a massive, jiggling ochre jelly. My first thought? Horrifying. My second thought? Let's leave before it decides to jiggle over to eat us. Joben's first thought? Hit it with his sword. That goes predictably wrong and of course as we sensibly began to flee, the murderous gelatin has decided we're worth the effort of a chase. So around the dungeon we go, only instead of, oh I don't know, going somewhere it can't follow us, our fearless troop heads right into a dead end filed with Kruthiks - the worst sort of giant insect to encounter whilst fleeing a large jelly. We miraculously survive both the jelly and the insectoids, then head back towards the less decaying parts of the Keep. Near the entrance we discover a foul-smelling half-orc who wants to join our merry band. Do we ask for some sort of credentials or a display of brawn or brains to determine his worthiness? No. We have a dance-off. Continue reading "Reports From the Field" Monday, March 22. 2010
Health Care (Reform) Bill Posted by The Mad Giggler

So as most of you should know, Congress has passed a bill that will affect how health care works in America. It was a pretty thick document, filled with lots of legal-speak. I enjoyed this op-ed in the New York Times about it. I'll post some excerpts for the link-clicking impaired.
But the part I most heartily agreed with was this: As a conservative, I suspect they’re wrong. But now that the bill has passed, as a citizen of the United States, I dearly hope they’re right. Indeed, I hope that 20 years from now, in an America that’s healthier, richer and more solvent than today, a liberal can brandish this column and say “I told you so.” Because the alternative would mean that we’re all about to be very sorry, and for a very long time to come. Mr. Elbows might find this entry to be quite interesting. You may not know it, but he has put his hand to poetry from time to time. I happen to have recently discovered this gem from high school.
Listen.pdf You may notice a special note at the bottom of the pdf file. Our senior class president was under the impression that I had written the poem for her throughout most of our senior year. It wasn't until a post-high school hiking trip that Mr. Elbows corrected this. Enjoy. Thursday, March 11. 2010To tide you over

Why Twilight Isn't That Bad Posted by The Mad Giggler

Joey, just stop reading now. Just kidding, it's not really about vampires.
This is a post I've been meaning to write ever since I first read this blog post by L.E. Modesitt Jr. My view on this has been further solidified by the defensive nature the authors of the tor.com blog take when discussing the "elitism" of so-called literary magazines while simultaneously slamming the Twilight series of books and movies. One person I know dismisses the Twilight series out of hand because it deals with vampires. This person would also willingly admit to avoiding Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Interview with the Vampire, Dracula and basically any media involving vampires. This post is not about that. I think I may have already mentioned that. This post is about dismissing something because it's not cool or comes from a genre that is not cool. Continue reading "Why Twilight Isn't That Bad" |
