Union Ship Valiant
First Officer's Log Shortly after we completed our training missions, and as we were leaving spacedock, the Captain suffered a blow to the head that seems to have brought his mental capacity to that of a young child - he sits at the Engineering station and plays an ancient Earth game called "Pac-Man". Unfortunately, after our recent conflict with the Protectorate, the Union is desperately short of ships and we are needed immediately at the New Earth border, so I have taken command of the ship. Our mission is three-fold. We are to rendezvous with the Seaward, who is carrying some documents that contain evidence against the New Earth dictator Chancellor Alexander, proving that he has been selling Protectorate energy crystals to their mortal enemies, the Annowai. After obtaining these documents, we are to meet with a fleet of Protectorate ships and transfer the documents to them, so they can take action against the Chancellor. Once the Protectorate has been advised of the mis-deeds of their New Earth puppet, we are to head to New Earth itself and evacuate the Union embassy there. Our contacts have informed us that nearly 1,000 aliens have taken refuge inside the embassy there; so far, we don't believe that the New Earth Secret Police know they're there. Before we arrive at New Earth, the Ambassador and I have to have a serious coversation about how many lives we're going to try and save, and the level of risk that is acceptable. Fortunately, most of my crew appear to be very capable. My only real concern, other than the Captain, is the Scanners Officer. I'm not sure he completely passed his training cycle. End log. I'm unabashedly trying to shame you all into writing stuff again. Remember how much fun the meta-game with the same theme turned out to be?
Do more of that. Thursday, June 23. 2011Server Outage
Service on this computer will be intermittent over the next 24-48 hours; the ISP is moving us to new networking hardware, and I'm taking the opportunity to roll us to the next release of the server operating system during the outage. See you all on the other side...

At one point during this podcast, while we were discussing energy weapons, Pete became so excited he began to shout and pound the table - it was so loud, the microphone literally could not handle the input at one point and it completely shut off. You'll know the moment when you hear it...it's really too bad, the conversation had me laughing so hard I thought I would pass out. You'll never know what you missed! Brought to you from the "TW5 Studio", we cover episodes 1-4 of Babylon 5, Season 2.

I don't know why all the audio glitches really started up again after I took over the podcast, but there was a bit of a hangup in this week's recording - hopefully, we caught them all in post-processing and this audio sounds pretty clean. We were all really excited to start Babylon 5 proper, although I did find a couple of instances where I had to "ring the bell", our signal to remind/reassure the listeners that "it *does* get better than this". Aaron, the TrekWest5 intern, brings his usual apathetic reticence to this week's podcast (sometimes, I wonder if it's even worth the gasoline of hauling him to the Podcast Bunker.) We cover episodes 1-4 of Babylon 5, Season 1.

Not long after we first started dating, I began to work on my wife to get her to start reading Fantasy and S/F - she hadn't been much of a fan until then. However, I didn't get a whole lot of traction until they started working on the movies for "The Lord of the Rings", when she finally read "The Hobbit" and LotR. This is all just a preface to say - check out her interpretation of Smaug!

We are now running version 1.5.5 of s9y, our blog package. Let me know if you see any problems.
EDIT: I have also turned on mod_deflate for all content coming from 'banshee' - the production server that hosts all the homestarmy-related blogs. This should result in a decent speedup for content serving. Again, if it causes any difficulty, please let me know ASAP. Monday, January 31. 2011Server Maintenance

INS: A Post-Mortem Posted by Ancient of Days

Quoth the original post: "My one concern is that this not turn into an attack post on You-Know-Who." Come on, MG, I'm a Harry Potter hater, and even I know we're supposed to call him 'Tom Riddle'...
More seriously, here are some of my thoughts - please don't take these as attacks on "Mr. Riddle", they're just a frank interpretation of events through the lens of my own experience. This is only the first half of the entry, discussing some of the things that "went wrong" - there's another half of an article in the works about the things that "went right", but I'm having more trouble finding the words for that half, so I'm pushing out this portion now. Monday, December 6. 2010Apologies
Dear Listeners:
As some of you may know, I (Joey) have been suffering from some health issues this past year. Unfortunately, my physical body is trying (yet again) to re-assert its dominance in my life - this put me in the situation this weekend where I spent several days paralyzed with pain and was not even able to get to a phone to let Pete know there would be no podcast delivered for editing this week. As circumstances provide, we will get our review of the last of the "Star Trek" films published, as well as return to our regularly scheduled programming with "The West Wing". On behalf of both Peter and myself, I apologize for the gap in the schedule. Friday, December 3. 2010

I'm a big fan of Gregg Easterbrook, who writes under the nom-de-web "Tuesday Morning Quarterback" (or TMQ) - I find his writing style entertaining, and he gives decent insight into the whys and wherefores of many things that happened in games I could not watch each week. I was really impressed by a recent article he wrote directed at kids who want to play college sports, and I thought many of you might enjoy it as well - so, with minimal further ado, I bring you Tuesday Morning Quarterback's Thousand-Word Guide to College Recruiting. Even if you're not a TMQ fan - or a fan of professional sports in general - you should still check it out.
