OK, so it's already almost an hour late, and they still haven't gotten the sound figured out, but it seems like it's starting.
Tuesday, September 9. 2008Neal Stephenson Webcast Tonight
Since, for some reason outside my realm of knowledge, we have no D&D tonight, I thought I'd pass on this information about a Neal Stephenson webcast going on tonight.
In case you're not a fan, Neal Stephenson is often considered one of the "fathers of cyberpunk" - both Snow Crash and The Diamond Age: or A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer were very formative books for me as I tried to join "that whole internet thing" back when I was in High School; and if you haven't read his short story "In the beginning was the Command Line", you can download it here - in addition to being written as a compelling narrative, it has an interesting historical element to it. You should also follow the links discussing the work of The Long Now Foundation, if you're not familiar with them. The Rosetta Project is particularly interesting, but the entire concept of "the seed of a very long term cultural institution" fascinates me. Trackbacks

I really enjoyed the excerpt, and here's a few links to some reviews of the book:
http://www.rudyrucker.com/blog/2008/09/08/anathem/ - includes lots of links to pages discussing the underlying scientific principles. http://www.arcanology.com/2008/06/24/anathem-and-music/ - a brief discussion by someone who "Won" a review copy from LibraryThing http://www.nypost.com/seven/09072008/postopinion/postopbooks/the_geek_shall_inherit_the_earth_127926.htm - spends more time talking about Neal than the book itself, but had some interesting info |
