Here's a shortcut: Get Smarter.
Thursday, May 14. 2009I hate you Frank Longo
I love Sudoku. It is lots of fun for me. I actually use it as a way to relax and get my brain to "turn off" before going to bed. I have been using the Frank Longo Martial Arts series of books. I started about 4 years ago and have casually worked my way up to Black Belt. By the end of that book I was averaging about 5 min per puzzle. I was spectacularly pleased with myself because here was something that I could mentally best AoD at.
I went down to my local Barnes & Noble to purchase a new Sudoku book when I noticed the Second Degree Black Belt version of the Frank Longo Sudoku books. I naturally assumed that this would be the same type of puzzles, and that second degree meant volume 2 and wasn't referencing degree of difficulty. Boy was I wrong. I started about 8 of the puzzles and it was about a week before I finally solved 1 of them. It is not beyond the realm of possibility now for me to sit in bed for a half hour just working on one puzzle. I am going on week 4 now and I have successfully completed 5 puzzles out of 15 started. My best record to date has been 15 min to solve one puzzle. If anybody knows any short cuts I would love to hear them. Trackbacks

Here's a shortcut: Get Smarter.
Swatson on :
Is it safe to assume that getting smarter is a shortcut? What if you're really really stupid? That could take decades, right?
The Mad Giggler on :
You might be right. It could take a long time for Radar to get smarter. He should just hire someone to do them for him.
Ancient of Days on :
Wait, *WHAT*?!?
Swatson on :
I enjoy Sudoku also, but I don't ever time myself as it takes away from my enjoyment, and I don't think well under time pressure. I've never done Black Belts although AoD has conversed with me regarding them.
Regarding Sudoku, I don't enjoy the levels where you "guess" and try it out. I hope that makes sense. I enjoy the ones where if you know the logic behind the puzzle you can figure it out. Radar on :
Exactly! And this new book seems to require the "guess" more often than not. It's frustrating.
Also, when I time myself I am not trying to get it done in a certain time, I am only seeing how long it takes me to do the puzzle. Swatson on :
So, I'm cool with seeing how long it takes as long as I'm not racing. I'd like it to be an accident to beat my time, know what I mean? And I refuse to do Sudoku with guessing. If I don't finish the puzzle, I don't want it to be from being a bad guesser.
Daboo on :
How about: send the book to a fiery death in a pagan ritual.
Swatson on :
I like your thinking. Will it involve humans too? I have a list if you'd like.
